Clean Coast Initiative Foundation Launches National Effort to Restore Endangered US Waterways

United States, 4th Jun 2025 — As climate change, pollution, and habitat degradation accelerate across the country, the Clean Coast Initiative Foundation (CCIF) has launched a nationwide campaign to restore some of America’s most threatened marine and freshwater ecosystems.

The five-year initiative will focus on restoring thousands of acres of wetlands and waterways across 30 states. It combines ecological science, community engagement, and education to strengthen climate resilience, improve water quality, and protect biodiversity.

“This isn’t just about the environment—it’s about the future of entire communities,” said Rachel Alvarez, Executive Director of the Clean Coast Initiative Foundation. “America’s waterways are in crisis, but we have the tools—and the people—to fix it.”

The Foundation’s work includes deploying native oysters and mussels, which naturally filter pollutants from water, and rebuilding wetlands and green infrastructure to mitigate runoff, reduce erosion, and buffer against storms and sea-level rise.

Coast-to-Coast Restoration Strategy

Restoration efforts are active or planned in:

  • Gulf Coast: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida
  • Atlantic & Mid-Atlantic: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine
  • Pacific Coast: California, Oregon, Washington
  • Great Lakes Region: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York
  • Major River Systems: Missouri, Iowa, Tennessee, Colorado, Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Mississippi

Sites are selected based on ecological vulnerability, restoration potential, and local community readiness.

Educating the Next Generation of Stewards

Beyond restoration, the Foundation is working to cultivate a culture of water stewardship through school partnerships, shoreline cleanups, and citizen science initiatives. Youth and community members are trained and mobilized to lead local conservation efforts and advocate for long-term ecosystem protection.

“We’re building more than healthy coastlines—we’re building civic engagement and environmental leadership,” said Alvarez. “Clean water isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for public health, biodiversity, and economic stability.”

Pushing Toward 35% Conservation by 2032

The initiative supports a broader national goal to restore and conserve 35% of the nation’s wetlands and waterways by 2032. By targeting high-impact restoration zones and empowering communities to act locally, CCIF aims to make measurable progress toward this ambitious milestone.

As flooding, pollution, and habitat loss continue to impact communities across the U.S., the Clean Coast Initiative Foundation is calling on educators, policymakers, students, and citizens to get involved.
